Memorial Day Memories

My parents, sisters, husband, kids, and nieces, and I all gather at my parents‘ house during Memorial Day weekend. Our first task is traveling to New Crown Hill Cemetery to visit the graves of our loved ones. We started doing this a couple years after my dad and I, with the support of several family members, created a 200+ page family history book of my dad’s maternal family. The first edition was released February 2011. I am currently building a website and transferring the information, so it is a living document.

After all of that walking, we were famished and ready to eat. I thought that this would be a great opportunity to harvest some items from our garden to bring to my parents’ house.

I harvested some mint and made some minty lemonade. We also harvested some lettuce, chive blossoms, sage flowers, and tarragon to make a salad. To go with the salad, I whipped up my dijon vinaigrette.

Let‘s just say I didn’t take anything home.

Remember, anyone can be a gardener. You just need to get ready, get set, and grow!
